*History:
Erik was born in Calgary, Alberta. He lived a relatively normal life in a privileged paranormal family, so he had a lot of opportunities many others of his species would never have, like a proper eduction. He graduated highschool and went to university to peruse a career as a teacher. When he graduated university, he moved up north to Nunavut to teach. He did this because the pay was better and there was a chance he would be hired despite being a shifter. He was correct, and after accepting a teaching position, moved to the capital of the territory, a city named Iqualuit.
He lived there for three years before meeting his future wife, a non-shifting shifter named Dahlia, who was a journalist writing a series of articles designed to teach the country about their long-forgotten northern brothers. They met at a conference, and their friendship bloomed almost instantaneously to a relationship. Within six months of meeting, and five months after their first date, Dahlia and Erik moved in together and lived happily together for nearly four years until Erik proposed. A year after their wedding their first and only child, Tara, was born.
The little family grew into a happy and normal family, and Erik enjoyed giving his bird-shifter daughter the best life someone like them could ever hope to have. She had an education, money saved away for college, and he and Dahlia were able to support any hobby their precious little girl set her heart to (no matter how many times she quit).
But one day Erik's happy life would be torn apart. Dahlia was out on the town one night when a group of humans, mixed male and female, trapped and assaulted her. Dahlia reported rape, but her charges were denied due to 'lack of evidence'. This infuriated poor, heartbroken Erik, who hired the best lawyer he could afford to work their case and have the assailants arrested. Not even the lawyer could help, and they lost their case, their home, and most of their life savings. The pressure, guilt, and stress proved to be too much for Dahlia and when Tara was ten and one half years old, Dahlia committed suicide, leaving her mourning husband an only father.
Erik was so scared and angry he could not keep his mind off finding the men and women who effectively murdered his wife and taking his revenge on them. He sold everything he owned and took his car and his eleven-year-old daughter on the road in search of the criminals. He did not know what he would do if he found him, but he had a fairly good idea. Though the longer they searched the more Erik believed he would never find them. Then one day, while he and Tara were having lunch in a city in the US ( a long way from their hometown in Nunavut), Erik found one. In fact, two of the men and one woman Dahlia identified were there, seemingly on vacation, as luck would have it and, in a fit of rage, Erik confronted them. He had a knife with him, but he did not intend on using it. But the confrontation turned violent and suddenly Erik found himself angrily brandishing the knife at one of the men. It was then that the single father was shot dead, leaving his only daughter an orphan in a foreign country.
Of course, he remembers none of this. The last thing he remembers was waking up in a hospital like place, staring up at machines and doctors. "We have saved you, Erik. You were shot." they told him. They told him that he was a soldier turned teacher and that he had gotten into a fight with a robber who shot him repeatedly in the chest. They had to replace some of his organs with that of other animals and paranormals. They gave him medication to "help with the nightmares" and other vitamins he took, and still takes, daily to help keep his body working. "It will take a long time for your body to work as well as it did, but we think you will do just fine as long as you keep taking your medicine." They told him he had no family: no parents, no cousins, no aunts, no wife...and no daughter.
He was released and then sent to Hobart, where he would receive additional treatment. It was there where he met his current girlfriend, a scientist name Citole who worked at the local hospital. Erik sometimes still has dreams about a little girl who calls his name in distress. He does not know why, or who the girl is. He suspects perhaps he met her while he was serving in the military.
He has no idea he has a daughter, and suspects nothing.
