It was a relief when Lily opened the door and took the clothes; I had been beginning to wonder if she had slipped out the window and taken off or something. I smiled warmly as she explained that he had fallen asleep in the bathtub, poor girl must be exhausted.
“Not a worry at all hunni but I would hazard a guess your bed would be more comfortable then the bathtub at least, even if it is second hand, and of course its ok you washed your clothes in the sink, though I do have a washing machine as well”
I said with a grin, turning from the door after handing over the clothes and giving her privacy to disappear into the bathroom again to get changed. When she came back out she practically dragged me to the sofa and pulled me down into it next to her. I laughed slightly as I lost my balance slightly and plopped down next to her with a thump.
“I-- I’ve been searching around for some work and so I’ll hopefully be able to help with rent and such soon. Hey so, um, how do go about becoming a burlesque dancer? Not that I think I’d be able to do it, it looks way too difficult, but how does the whole application process turn out? You’re one of the bosses right? Oh, and, also,” The girl instantly started babbling a soon as I was seated next to her and a grinned slightly at her, I supposed this was what I had been like earlier, it was kind of adorable really.
However I didn’t get the chance to answer her question before she launched into her story about Xara and Azure. I was stunned into silence, I didn’t know what look was plastered on my features maybe horror, maybe there was no look there I wasn’t sure. Of course I knew the story I had been in the background of the plan, helping them gain access by flirting with one of the guards who was a regular at the club we danced at back then. Gaining them the all-important access codes along with a few of the other girls who had helped.
I had fled to Tasmania with them for a fresh start, we had all been in it together even though some of us were just human, Xara and the rest of them were like family to me. We had started the club up to help us get on our feet since it was what we knew how to do and this little island didn’t have many clubs where we could just get jobs so we had to make our own jobs. I wasn’t sure if I really wanted to share all this with Lily just yet however and was wracking my brain for a response for when she finished, I was just lucky I guess that she was so absorbed in telling her story she didn’t notice how my body had gone rigid and my eyes glazed over slightly.
Or maybe she did and she just thought it was a typical reaction of someone finding out their employee was some sort of rebel fugitive. “Lordy lordy, but will they be hunted, you know what I’m saying? You don’t think we don’t have the facility here? God, if they got their hands on those two… Shit’d hit the fan harder ‘n you’d even imagine, especially if they had kids. If they had kids… pfft! They’re already goners if you ask me. Did you know that, when you hired ‘em?”
I snapped out of my trance like state at those words and I could feel my temper flair, it didn’t happen often I usually was able to control my temper, I had to working at the club I couldn’t exactly blow a gasket every time some slime ball grabbed at my ass or I wouldn’t make any money but her words hit a place where I couldn’t restrain myself I pulled myself off the couch and out of Lily’s reach.
“Those ba*****s at the facility will not touch my friends and they are damn well not goners we have been through hell and back together and we are still here, this little island will not be the end of them.”
I said with passion tears of anger and fear for my friends welling in my eyes before stomping off to my room and slamming the door. I didn’t mean to take this out on Lily and the second I was behind my closed door I regretted it. Learning against my door I slid to the floor where I tried to pull myself together. I shouldn’t have taken anything out on Lily what did she know of my part in all this, nothing, she was just trying to make sure I knew what was going on with my employees. But if she knew about Xara and Azure and everyone then who else knew. And if people knew she was right it wouldn’t be long before they were hunted down and I just wasn’t ready to face that option.
We had just gotten ourselves set up here would we have to run again? Or would we be able to stay and fight?

Lily stood as Geena ran from the lounge room. “Geena--” she started, but her companion was already locked in her room. She stood and stared at the room’s door, dumbfounded and terribly angry at herself. Why had she been so thoughtless? True, her predictions were not entirely false, but what was also true was that these people not only managed to infiltrate the Miami branch HQ but also had enough leverage to escape all charges, jail time, and convince the government to fund their new lives in a foreign country. Whatever the Facility of Paranormal Research and Medicine (FOPRAM) could throw at them Lily was fairly certain that Xara, Azure and the rest of their gang could throw it right back. Yet, if FOPRAM did manage lay their hands on the group, surely they would be goners. She had had many a friend plucked off the street, never to be seen or heard from again. Lily knew they were dead as soon as it happened, which was why she had stopped making such close friends, aside from Jackson and Kylie. Despite her best efforts Lily’s magical powers were almost directly related to her emotions on a subconscious level, so when she makes a powerful emotional connection to someone, she can almost tap into their emotions and gains a powerful insight into their state of health and wellness. When her friend was plucked from the street, and killed, Lily felt it.
As it was, a crackling outline of energy danced around her form, illuminating her carefully guarded aura as the reddish hue that it was, and she felt her shoulders droop. An ache formed in her temples as she considered her options. Apologizing certainly was one of them. She would apologize until she was blue in the face; she had made Geena cry, after all the woman had done and was willing to continue to do for Lily, she’d made her cry. If that didn’t make someone feel like a completely terrible person, she didn’t know what would.
Lily very gently walked down the hall toward Geena’s bedroom and slid down the wall to sit on the floor beside the door. She opened her mouth as if to say something, but thought better of it, and frowned. What could she possibly say?
“Geena, I--” she sighed, “Oh, god, I’m so sorry. I didn’t know you were so close… I spoke thoughtlessly. I hope you can forgive me… I wasn’t wishing any ill will on them in the least! I’m actually kind of upset I didn’t bring anything to be autographed actually. Christ, the courage it must have took to go and do something like that is just…” she sighed again, “You guys are fucking heroes in the paranormal community. If we all weren’t so bloody afraid, we’d join ya, believe me; some people are getting close to it too.
“Well,” she shook herself and rose from her seated position, “Anyway, thank you for letting me shower and for giving me some clean clothes. I am so sorry for offending you and your friends—I really didn’t mean it like that.”
Lily’s expression was grim as she turned and walked back into the bathroom to gather her soaking wet outfit. She rubbed her tearing eyes and ground her teeth in anger at herself. It wasn’t the first impression she wanted to make, in any situation, and she’d fucked up royally too. She lingered in the bathroom a moment. Her reasoning was that she was making sure she did not look as vulnerable and upset as she was before venturing out into the dark, dangerous night streets, but the real reason was to wait and see if Geena would forgive her.
A sudden overwhelming feeling of excitement electrified her limbs and she felt almost giddy with it. If. If Geena forgave her then maybe…perhaps she could join them. If she joined them, perhaps she would be safe. If she joined them, maybe she could use her powers to protect them.
If she joined them, she would see more of Geena.
Oh, God, she thought with a silent, painful groan as she stared at her reflection in the mirror. I hope she forgives me…

I heard her call Geena as I shut the door to my room but I didn’t go back out instead my back slid down the door until I was sitting leaned against it. It wasn’t that I wanted to be a cow and ignore her I could hear how tortured she was for upsetting me in that one word, I just wasn’t ready to go back out then until I had composed myself a little. I was good at holding back tears normally but once they started they felt like such a paralysing thing.
As I sat there drawing in giant shaky breaths trying to force the sobs back into my body and bury them back down where they belonged, out of sight I tried to think back to the last time I had cried. My mind came up blank.
I heard footsteps on the floor outside and a second back sliding down the wall just to the left of where I sat but on the other side of the closed door. There was silence for a moment as I continued to take deep calming breaths slowly my surely forcing the tears away and Lily just sat there, I guessed trying to figure out what to say. I almost spoke out saying not to worry about it, to just give me a minute and I’d be back out but my voice didn’t work right away and my the time I thought it might she was speaking.
“Geena, I-- Oh, god, I’m so sorry. I didn’t know you were so close… I spoke thoughtlessly. I hope you can forgive me… I wasn’t wishing any ill will on them in the least! I’m actually kind of upset I didn’t bring anything to be autographed actually. Christ, the courage it must have took to go and do something like that is just… You guys are fucking heroes in the paranormal community. If we all weren’t so bloody afraid, we’d join ya, believe me; some people are getting close to it too.” I didn’t know what to say right away, I thought her including me as the hero was way over the top, no one had even realised I had helped them, I was so low down in the ranks at that club they never even noticed when I took off.
“Well, Anyway, thank you for letting me shower and for giving me some clean clothes. I am so sorry for offending you and your friends—I really didn’t mean it like that.” I knew I needed to speak up to let her know it was ok but I just sat there for a moment longer wondering what to say I wasn’t good at this stuff. I heard her get up and walk away I sighed and hoisted myself up and away from the door, walking further into my room I went to the mirror on my wall and sighed again, my stage makeup was running in black streaks down my face.
I pulled out the little tube of makeup remover I kept in my bedside table and the cloth I kept there, too often I couldn’t make it to the bathroom to remove all my makeup due to exhaustion or sore feet so I had learned to be prepared in my room so I wouldn’t have to wake up with panda eyes in the morning and zitts from the makeup clogging my pores all night long.
I scrubbed at my face with the remover and cloth until all my makeup fell away to reveal just me no makeup, face slightly red from the scrubbing but most signs of the tear show gone. Placing the stuff back in the draw I headed back to my door and pulled it open walking slowly down the hall. I had a moment of panic when I saw that Lily wasn’t in the lounge room, had she taken off into the streets? I looked back at the front door but it was still locked. I breathed a little easier and edged my way over to the entrance to the bathroom.
I stood in the door way looking at her as she stared at the mirror she looked angry with herself, her clothes balled up in her hand dripping slightly from their dampness. I looked down at the floor and kicked my bare feet against the floor a little bit.
“Sorry I overreacted back there majorly, I just worry about them all, they are like my family at that club, I don’t blame you for anything you said, there was no way you would have known about how close we all are there, and in a way it’s probably good to know what people are saying about them on the street, we can be on better lookout for trouble, so thanks.” I said to her from the doorway, “so do you forgive me for being a tantrum throwing idiot?” I asked her with a slight grin on my face.
I had moved closer as I asked placing a hand on her shoulder I hoped she wouldn’t pull away, or insist on leaving I would hate to see her back out on the streets. I desperately wanted to just kiss her then and make everything alright but for all her flirting I still wasn’t sure how she was take that so I held off hovering close to her waiting to see what her reaction would be.

Geena’s proximity to Lily made the witch shiver, despite her best efforts to remain ‘cool’. The fact that the dancer had decided to even come out and talk to her again was good enough but now Geena had placed her hand on Lily’s shoulder, and she stood so close…! Not to mention the uncertainty of their argument and the need to feel comforted following it. How could she do anything but what she did next? Lily grinned, closed the distance between she and Geena and kissed her. It was brief, shy, and awkward but it wasn’t void of passion and she flushed deeply when she pulled away to give her companion and sheepish look.
“Yeah,” she said quietly, grinning wide, “I forgive ya. Of course I forgive you,” Lily brushed her hair away from her face, shivering with a mixture of exhaustion and excited nervousness, “It’s me who—who should be asking you to forgive me, not the other way around, I mean I totally insulted your friends.” She averted her eyes and quickly took Geena’s hand, afraid that if she did it too slowly she would run away, and dropped her soaking wet rags to the floor, completely abandoning them. She took Geena quietly back to the sofa and sat down gently. “I hope y-you didn’t mind that I kissed you back then I really haven’t had that many partners so if I’m like, body language impaired I’m really sorry, and I guess I should have asked first before I did anything but sometimes I don’t think—actually I don’t think more often than not, especially when I get rambling, when I get rambling I tell people everything! Like this one time I got scared by a thunderstorm and so I started babbling about how my brother has only one testicle, isn’t that fantastic? Just one! He lost it because he was harassing a cat. True story—it wasn’t pretty. Oh! Not that I’ve ever seen his testicles before, that’d just be weird, but his fiancé told me all about it because we’re good friends, and like, she’s awesome, she’s actually a stripper I think? Or maybe she’s the seismologist? I dunno I get those two mixed up all the time! I--” Lily blinked and stopped dead, mid-sentence, “Oh wow,” she said, “I’m sorry. See what I mean though?”
Lily fell into silence for a moment, “So…I guess what I’m getting at trying to ask you is… well, the kissing was good, yes?” she grinned girlishly.
((SLOPPY MAKEOUT SESSION… XD then, a few days later…))
Lily arrived at the club wearing some of the clothes Geena helped pick out for her. She no longer felt completely out of place not wearing the rags she had come in with but there was still a sense of unease knowing Geena had paid for the clothes. She hated that the woman had been so generous… especially since, until recently, she had no way of paying her back. But tonight she came bearing great news, and knocked on the performers entrance.
Xara answered, looking rather frazzled. “Oh…hello Lily.” She smiled, “Are you here for Geena?”
“Yes I am, oh!” she produced a tin of cookies and handed them to Xara. “These are for you and the others for when you have breaks. They’re chocolate!”
Xara’s eyes lit up, “Oh thank you! That is very kind of you. They smell amazing.” She opened the door wide to allow Lily in, “She’s at the back.” Lily grinned,
“Thanks Xara!” Lily skipped toward Geena’s dressing area, sneaking a peak in Xara’s direction in time to see her snatch a cookie for herself before leaving them in the lounge area for the performers. She grinned to herself. Xara seemed to be nice enough, despite her rough-around-the-edges first impressions. She has a soft spot for cookies, Lily observed as Xara slinked back to grab a second cookie. The witch grinned. Everyone had their guilty pleasures, she supposed.
She reached Geena and tapped her on the shoulder, “Hey! Guess who’s got a job? Me! Guess who starts tomorrow? This girl, right here. Guess who is going to pay you back and also start paying her half of the rent? You got it,” she jerked a thumb at herself with a smug grin, “All o’ this. Isn’t that exciting!” she giggled, “I’m going to be a secretary for a preschool and handle all the paperwork and stuff and sometimes even help with the kids! Not exactly what I was planning on doing with my life but at least I can practice my people skills and my acting skills! I was going to be an actress, like, Shakespeare and shit. But this works too! Hey maybe I’ll even do a documentary on child development in action, I could be a director or a filmmaker or something and you can be my—very talented and very gorgeous—costume designer and makeup artist. Waddya say… 70-30? No, you’re right, that’s not fair, 60-40? Oh alright! You drive a hard bargain: 50-50, a massage, and you’ve got yourself a deal!” she leaned in and gave Geena a quick peck on the cheek, “But seriously, I’m going to pay you back, as soon as I have my first paycheck.”
((hope this was alright, thought you could introduce the big bad wolf ))

It was really quite a relief to have lily close the gap and kiss me, I found myself kissing her back gently almost hesitantly. Part of me thought I shouldn’t encourage this, I wasn’t one for commitment and with Lily living with me I couldn’t exactly follow my normal pattern of flirt, sleep with them and take off. However there was another part of me that wanted to try a new pattern, one which might lead to me trying out this thing called commitment. The thought scared the hell out of me and I had to stop myself from pulling away from Lily and bolting as she pulled away from kissing me and began talking and pulling me over to the couch.
“Yeah, I forgive ya. Of course I forgive you, It’s me who—who should be asking you to forgive me, not the other way around, I mean I totally insulted your friends.” She spoke averting her eyes. “How about be call it even, besides you couldn’t have known how close we are there so all is forgiven.” I spoke with a smile before Lily started up again.
Or maybe she’s the seismologist? I dunno I get those two mixed up all the time! I-- Oh wow, I’m sorry. See what I mean though?”
I giggled as she stopped herself from rambling any further, not only at the fact that she really did ramble but also at the fact of her brother only having one testicle. I didn’t bother commenting this time instead I smiled and leant in close gently reaching up to cradle her face between my hands and kissed her.
___________________________________
It had been a few days since Lily came to live with me and we had spent the best part of the night making out on the couch. It had been a reasonably easy few days which surprised me, I was not one for commitment and I don’t know maybe it was because Lily and I hadn’t actually slept together yet I wasn’t sure but I wasn’t feeling that normal uncontrollable urge to flee. I was at the club getting ready out back for my first “show” of the night, around me there were plenty of girls walking around wearing very little, fighting over mirrors, hunting down makeup and costumes, it could be chaos back her most of the time but it felt so right.
I heard the door open to the back room but didn’t turn around as I added another layer of mascara to my over the top eye makeup. I was just screwing the top back on the mascara when I got a tap on the shoulder and the bubbly voice of Lily sounded from behind me too eager to tell me her news to wait for me to turn around. I smiled at her as I did turn and listened to her with an indulgent smile on my face she really was cute when she got excited like a little kid in a candy store. I was glad to see her so happy over having a job and giggled as she went off on a story about her grand plans for a documentary.
“Sounds good sweetheart but like I already said you don’t need to pay me back consider the clothes and everything a gift” I said gently, I wasn’t rolling in money by any stretch of the imagination but I had always been a giving person. “Geena sorry to interrupt but I can’t find my costume for the next act.” A voice spoke from beside me. I spun around in my chair to look at Cilla, one of the fellow dancers, and one of the girls who I had slept with a long time ago now, not my finest moment, she helped me realise what a mistake it was mixing business with pleasure. She was quite pretty but then all of the dancers were, she had black wavy hair and was of average build and she stood before me in just her lacy under ware, makeup done up to the same extreme and most everyone else there.
“I last saw it right up back” I spoke getting up from my chair, “I’ll be right back hunni” I said turning my attention back to Lily I gave her a peck on the lips and skipped off to the back of the room leaving Cilla with Lily for a moment. It took me a good 5 minutes sorting through the racks of costumes at the back to find the one I was looking for, we really should have a better system for all this but it never seemed to happen but at least we generally always got the girls on stage in time and in the right costumes so we can’t have been doing too badly.
I plucked the outfit off the hanger and walked back to where I had left Cilla and Lily wondering absently what they might be talking about as I approached. “Here you go Cilla” I said easily as I stepped back up beside Lily resting a hand on her back as I used my other hand to hold out the outfit to Cilla.

Geena was awesome. Not that I’m biased… okay maybe I’m a little biased, but I mean let’s look at the stone cold facts here: for one thing, she’s really funny. She’s just got an awesome way of speaking that seems to make everything happy. It’s just a Geena thing, I suppose, and she always seems to be able to make me smile. She’s also insanely generous. She’s so generous I’m almost uncomfortable with it. I don’t like taking things from people and not being able to give anything in return. The least I could do would be to pay her back for the clothes, but I certainly wanted to do more. I wasn’t used to receiving gifts y’know, so this is all a new thing for me. Well, aside from birthday gifts. I always just thought that anything outside of birthday and Christmas was charity. I accepted it for as long as I was unemployed but as soon as I got that job I had promised myself I would help pay for half of everything, even if I had to sneak into her room and hide wads of cash in her socks. I also didn’t need to mention how pretty she was, although that was really the last thing on my wish-list for possible boyfriends or girlfriends. I’d never really been able to say in all certainty whether or not I was gay or just bi, but I wasn’t too upset by it and people never really asked. I think that if Geena were a man I would still have fallen for her—er, him—just as much. Maybe. I don’t know it is kind of hard to imagine Geena as a man. For future reference I will stick with the first thought because that was more romantic (go me!). I’m always pretty damn terrible with romance, I’ve been told I’m romantically challenged. But that didn’t stop me from picking a few flowers on my way to see Geena, and when she went to get Cilla’s dress I placed them gently on her make-up desk.
Cilla was taller than I. Much, much taller. I was a midget next to her. She also looked frightfully miserable, as if being around people who weren’t catering to her every need was such a hardship for her. Or maybe I was reading too much into it. I always try to keep an open mind when I meet someone I don’t like at first but some people just get right under my skin. Even her smile seemed bitter. I heard that people who are less “popular” can tell whether or not someone’s smile is fake-- they have to. Me? I wasn’t exactly the most popular kid in school, but it is also part of my training to know when something is fake and real. Cilla, Geena, and all the other girls in this room were actresses in their own rights, and women are notorious for passive-aggressive behavior anyway. Except Xara…she’s just aggressive. I had the feeling that not many people screwed around with Azure, Tara or Xara. I certainly wouldn’t, but I wouldn’t want to get Geena angry with me either. Especially not angry enough to fight me because, shit, was she strong! The first night I had stayed with her we spent a considerable amount of time making out and I noticed how muscular she was, probably from all the years of dancing. I was a wet noodle in comparison. I admit that I was a bit of a nerd when I was younger, you know, computer games and first person shooters and sci-fi and all that shit. I was the queen of the nerds back in high school! Those certainly were good times. Everyone expected me to go into computer science or engineering or something like that but instead I went into the performance arts with hopes to become an actress since plays and operas were, and still are, my most passionate academic loves. So I knew when people were being fake.
“Hi,” Cilla said sweetly, “I’m Cilla.” “Lily.” I replied, just as politely. Cilla nodded, “Nice to meet you Lily. So are you…Geena’s friend?” I shrugged, “Well yes. I’m her roommate.” “Roommate?” Cilla frowned deeply, which made me frown as well. “I didn’t know she was looking for one.” “Ah, well.” I blushed and scratched my head nervously, “I needed a place to crash and she was kind enough to let me stay with her. Rough times, you know.” Wow, did I ever want to crawl into myself and disappear just then. This conversation had gotten awkward fast, and the amusement in Cilla’s eyes made it even worse. “Are those her clothes?” she asked, giving me a sly wink that I couldn’t tell if it was serious or ironic, “Seems to me as if you’re a little more than her roommate.” I blushed even deeper, “Ah--” “Listen, I hope you don’t find this too awkward, but Geena and I had a …thing, ages ago. I could give you some advice? For instance, I noticed you brought her flowers.” She gestured to the handful of specially picked flowers that lay across Geena’s desk. Cilla smirked, “Hun, Geena doesn’t really like gifts that you just find lying around in the dirt on the side of the road. Wild flowers just aren’t her cup of tea. I’d say buy her jewelry—gold, silver, diamonds… she loves that stuff. But it has to be the real-deal, none of that stainless steel stuff.” “Really?” “Oh yeah, totally. She’s got an expensive taste. She also needs constant attention so don’t leave her alone for too long or she’ll start to think you’re not interested.” I frowned, “That doesn’t really sound like Geena…” “Look, sweetie,” Cilla pat me on the shoulder, and I couldn’t tell if the gesture was condescending or not, “I’ve known her much longer than you have. We’re practically best friends. Trust me.” I didn’t know if I should trust her or not. My gut feeling told me this woman was a complete nutcase and that I shouldn’t trust her. Geena wasn’t anything like Cilla had said, and yet I was now so worried that Geena would leave me if I didn’t do things properly that I panicked. Maybe Cilla was right? I gave her a skeptical look, then nodded. Cilla took the flowers off the desk, “You’re doing the right thing! Oh, look, here she comes.” Geena came back carrying the dress and I smiled warmly at her. Cilla took the dress, and Geena placed her arm around my waist. As she did that, my whole body tingled and I leaned into her gently. Geena hugs always made everything better. She made me happier in one week than I can remember being in two years. I couldn’t possibly do anything to screw it up. I had to listen to Cilla…it was my only shot.
“Five minutes girls!” Xara called from somewhere in the forest of scrambling girls and costumes. I turned to Geena and gave her a peck on the cheek, “Good luck out there! Not that you need it. I’ll stay until the first intermission but then I’m going to go home and clean the kitchen. I, ah, need some more practice with my enchantment spells. The wooden spoon and the measuring cups got into a huge argument and there’s batter everywhere… even on the roof. Alternatively, there are cookies on the staff table if either of you want one.” I grinned and waved goodbye, not without stealing another kiss from Geena. I ended up getting lost in the performers lounge but Xara found me led me down the steps and into the viewer’s area before I got too lost. She was so cool. Okay so I had a bit of hero-envy for her, Azure and Tara. I admit it! I am such a dork.
-----------------------------------------
Cilla turned to Geena and snorted, “She’s an odd one.” She smiled, “Here,” she said, producing a small handful of flowers from behind her back. “I got these for you. I hope you like them… I saw them and I thought ‘I bet Geena would like those’, so I picked them.” She grinned and blew a kiss, “See you out there, luv. Ta!”
-----------------------------------------
Xara scowled as Cilla passed her and she approached Geena, “What was that all about?” she muttered under her breath, “I thought you two were finished? And what about Lily?” the alien’s scowl turned into a girlish grin, “She’s really in love with you...” Her grin faded again, and she gave Geena a dead-pan glare, “She’s really in love with you—whatever you do, don’t hurt her.” She twitched her shoulders straight again and smirked, “Well? Come on! Oh, and by the way, we’re having a meeting on Monday at noon.” She arched an eyebrow—this was no regular club meeting. “There has been…news.” She said quietly. She paused for a moment, “Bring Lily… her powers may be of use, and besides, I like her. Remember, Monday at noon.” Xara’s ears twitched, “Hurry up and get dressed, we go on in like, two minutes! You’re killin me, Geen!” she clapped her hands, grinning impishly, “Come on, come on, come on! TWO MINUTES, LADIES—TWO MINUTES.”

Something seemed off when I got back to the two girls, I couldn’t quite pick what it was, Lily had leant into my embrace easily enough as I had walked up placing my arm around her but something had changed while I was off getting the dress. I didn’t have time to ponder or figure out what it was or to even ask as just then Xara came bustling out of a group of girls towards us shouting that we only had 5 minutes left to get our butts ready.
Lily turned to me and placed a kiss on my cheek right after Xara’s words before babbling on in her cute way “Good luck out there! Not that you need it. I’ll stay until the first intermission but then I’m going to go home and clean the kitchen. I, ah, need some more practice with my enchantment spells. The wooden spoon and the measuring cups got into a huge argument and there’s batter everywhere… even on the roof. Alternatively, there are cookies on the staff table if either of you want one.” She gave me another kiss which I returned but didn’t have time to respond properly before she was waving enthusiastically and trying to find her way out of the sea of women.
“See you at home Lil!” I called out after her hoping she would hear over the normal babble of the performers lounge not to mention the racket coming from outside the room where the music was thumping off the walls and happy people drank and laughed, danced and had shouted conversations to be heard. I watched as she weaved her petite little body through the crowds and smiled a genuine happy smile. I was brought back to reality by Cilla’s snide comments about her being odd and I instantly bristled wanting to strike her for her words.
In the next stride however she was all sweet and handing me a bouquet of hand-picked wildflowers saying she had picked them herself as she thought I might like them. I automatically reached out and took them even though I would have preferred to reach out and sink my fist into her face. “Thanks…” I said in an unsure and skeptical kiss, looking after her like she was a mad women after she blew me a kiss and retreated, I shook my head and looked at the flowers, so not Cilla’s style, she was all about glitz and glamor no way she would have gotten her hands dirty to pick me flowers.
Xara replaced Cilla in front of me not long after the women had walked off “What was that all about? I thought you two were finished? And what about Lily?” she asked by way of greeting, I held up my hands and shook my head, “I have no idea what that was about, if you figure it out before I do be sure to let me know, and we are finished that girl is seriously wack, Lily is…” I froze lost for words how did I describe what lily was to me, though I could feel a sheepish grin light my face as I searched for words apparently that was enough as Xara’s face burst into a girlish grin commenting on how in love with me Lily was, it was contagious and I grinned wider too thinking about the cute little magic girl who had stumbled into my life and was working her magic on my heart though I wasn’t ready to admit how deeply she was working her way into it, I wasn’t good at commitment everyone knew that.
Before I could really let the girlish grin and warm glow spread the aliens features turned to a dead-pan glare one that never failed to send shivers down my spine. “She’s really in love with you—whatever you do, don’t hurt her.” I put my hands up again as if in surrender, “yes boss” I said with slight playfulness but seriousness as well. I sure as hell didn’t want to hurt Lily, but then I was so bad at relationships and commitment that even though I never meant to hurt anybody I usually inevitably ended up screwing up big time in one way or another.
I listened intently to her about the meeting and nodded confirmation that I would be there I rolled my eyes at her when she repeated herself, what did she think I was an idiot or something and couldn’t remember about a meeting. I knew that wasn’t true it was just important but it was still fun to goad her a little.
I snapped back to reality when she did to yelling about 2 minutes to go I almost forgot we were in the performers lounge, luckily I was practically ready, I ripped off my own clothes and pulled my costume on checking my makeup and hair in the mirror I dumped the flowers in the trash can before rushing off to find the stage, I didn’t want anything from Cilla.
I remember noticing as Lily left the club but the rest of the night was just blur of costume changes and shows. I was so glad to walk through the front door of my house that I now shared with Lily. I tried to be quiet as I kicked my heals off just inside the front door if Lily was asleep I didn’t want to needlessly wake her up.

The apartment was all cleaned up when Geena arrived home, Lily had made sure of that. Of course she was not going to leave her mess all over the kitchen for Geena to come home to. She convinced the mop, broom, and sponges to help her and together they tidied the house to even cleaner than before. Afterwards, when Lily had placed the helpful cleaning supplies back into their proper places, the witch snuggled down on the sofa under a blanket and watched a movie. It was a documentary on the struggles of witches;
"Aside from the faeries of the fae lands, or alongside them (no one is quite sure who came first), witches are one of the planets oldest paranormal species. They are found throughout the world in human literature, some cultures revering them as great healers and others condemned them, blaming them for the bad fortunes that befell them or their towns. This hatred grew and blossomed into its full, bloody form during the Early Modern Period, where hunting and burning witches was still legal. Unlike the faes, witches had no alternate world to return to and were therefore unable to escape the blood lust. Many witches, at least half of the world population, were destroyed during this period. Half of the witches put on trial were, indeed, human. Since it was so hard to determine whether a person was a witch or not, anyone accused of being a witch was put on trial and later burned. It was very easy, then, to accuse someone of being a witch for the simple fact that they just bothered you and, being unable to tell the difference between a witch and a human, the accused was almost always destroyed..."
Lily, of course, knew about all this already. In human schools the horror of the witch hunt was simply shrugged off as being an "unfortunate" moment in their history. Lily was homeschooled. She learned about the history of the world, not just of one species, but of them all, and how they interacted. Humans were certainly one of the more agressive species in history, but they were not the only ones who did questionable things. She would never pretend that some of her ancestors did horrific things to humans, and other creatures, practicing in the "black" or "dark" or "blood" magic.
Actually, Lily had some practice in the art of blood magic, and she was quite good at it. The trick to it was to use it only in emergency situations, and was effective mostly in healing situations if you did not want to use it for dark purposes. There was a philosophy, or a theory more like, that witches were born into classes seperated by dark or light. Dark witches would have magical abilities that were naturally more effective when used in any of the black, dark, or blood arts. Light witches were born with a natural effectiveness in more accepted forms of magic, things like healing for example. This did not mean, however, that a witch born to the dark class were going to grow up to be evil. Many dark witches and mages used their talents in the dark, black, or blood arts to help others, and some of the witch saints were of the dark class. On the flip-side, some of historie's most notorious magic villains were born to the light class. There was an ongoing council among the witch community to change the names of these classes officially, so good men and women were not branded and outcasted as criminals unjustly. But, of course, change is always hard to handle and many people are against changing the names. Lily voted for the change, being a member of the Society for Witches and Warlocks (SWW), but the council leaders had yet to tally a vote, and Lily was genuinely concerned the change would never happen; being classified as a Dark Class Witch, the renaming of her class was a high priority for her.
She dozed off on the sofa partway through the documentary, which she realized was slightly biased toward it's human viewers, and it was by chance that she woke again when Geena came in the house. She sat up and grinned at her roommate.
"Hey! How was work? I cleaned up. I hope I didn't misplace anything. The mop and the broom were very helpful, but the sponges were a little snarky. FYI," she jerked a thumb toward the kitchen, "The blue sponge is a racist. I caught it making racial slurs at the yellow sponge. Poor chap. Had to seperate them. Best keep it that way I suspect. Maybe the blue sponge could spend some time in the bathroom or something."
She stood and skipped about the living room, excited to see Geena again. "Oh! Hey, so, that Cilla chick is really nice. You two are good friends I'm guessing? Here, sit down for a bit! You've had a busy night. I'll make you some coffee." Lily zoomed into the kitchen and poured the coffee she had made earlier that night (it was still warm), and brought it out to Geena with a little cup of milk and some sugar if Geena wanted those in her coffee. Lily drank hers black, which often awarded her strange looks. She sat down on the arm of the sofa and grinned at Geena, "So... yeah! Anyway she was pretty nice. I didn't know you didn't like flowers though. Are you allergic to them or something? I am allergic to lilies. Ironic, right?"
